Design Floor Monday

Thanks to Judy at Patchwork Times, I'm encouraged each week to have something new to show on my design floor (most people have a design wall ..... one day when I grow up, I'll have one too !)

This week I'm taking out some UFO's from 2 years ago - I love these blocks, I made plenty of them for a wall hanging, but then I just kept making more and more, until I knew I wanted a bed size quilt. 



I was going to lay them out in a 5 by 7 blocks, but since these are 9" blocks - and since the blocks I want to make as a border block are 13" blocks - I thought maybe it'd be easier to do 6 by 6 - so I need to make one more of these.  Gotta figure out how to get this block into my EQ program, because this is the block I want to use as a border

I was going to make a bunch of these, all with blue star middles, but with different batiks on the outside color.  Of course, I could do THESE blocks for the main part of the quilt and use the others as a border ....  either way, I'm going to have to order more of the black fabric ... luckily I know the name!  If you have an opinion as to what would look better as a border, please leave a comment  !!

 Oh, and this was my "photo op" this week (this year I've vowed to take time to admire the things around me) The kids had left my watering can out in the yard last time they were playing. When the snow started to melt, it dripped and dripped off the roof - leaving me this -

Either block would make a stunning center or border. The colors are wonderful. Makes me think of a stained glass windwo.

I think the lattice would make a great border. Isn't it fun when a quilt has a mind of its own

Stunning Deb! What happens if you add a black sashing between the blocks? That would increase your size and maybe make a continuation of the stained glass effect as well? Also would make it oh so easy on all those 4 sections joining in the corners if that design plan works. Definately keep the stained glass pieces in the main body of the quilt. Stunning!

Wow! I think either way would look great.

I might try setting the quilt out both ways and let it set (if you can) and see which one you like better.

Very pretty. I like the look as it is in the photo. So modern yet the feel of the traditional stained glass is there too. Love it!

The "normal" way to make a quilt is to have the smaller blocks as a border. Do you feel "normal"?

I am so happy to have something to share this week.  About a month ago, I received some inspiration from another blogger on Design Wall Monday - hosted by Judy at Patchwork Times .  I immediately fell in love with the star quilt that Kate from Life in Pieces   had put together using the pattern from Country Junktion .  I knew immediately that I could use it as the center of a quilt, and finally use those garden maze blocks that were sitting in my UFO pile.  What do you think ? This is the quilt made from the BOM pattern alone This is that same quilt surrounded by my garden maze blocks I started sewing the garden maze blocks together to see how big of a border I will be needing around the star blocks.  Now to figure out if I should border around each block, or just around the outside of the stars - what do you think?

Design Wall Monday

Nearly Finished !   Didn't get much time to sew this weekend, but did get all 5 rows together - the borders are cut, 5" on the top/bottom and 3" on each side.   I might just try and get those on today as well.  Finished size of the quilt will be 84" by 100 ", a nice size, I think.    Backing has been ordered, so as soon as that shows up - it'll be off to the quilters.  I'll have the binding already made, so by the time it returns to me, it'll be a quick finish, and ready to gift.  I can't wait to get my hands on the fabrics that I ordered for my first ever EQ6 design !  I've posted a photo of that as well.  Of course, the kiddo's have a swim meet this weekend, so no sewing going on ..... very BIG SIGH.  To see what others are working on, check out Judy's Patchwork Times.
